Let ABCD be the rectangle with AB = 20 cm and CB = 8 cm

Let length be increased by 2 cm,

BF = 2 cm, AF = (20 + 2) cm

Area of original rectangle ABCD = $20 \times 8 c m^{2}$

Area of new rectangle AFED = $(20 + 2) \times 8 c m^{2}$

$= 20 \times 8 + 2 \times 8$

Hence, increase in area is $2 \times 8 = 16 c m^{2}$
