Question

The length of a rectangle is twice its breadth and the area is 98 sq. units. What is the perimeter of the rectangle

Open in App
Solution

As with all word problems we first have to convert it to an equation or equations.

L = length of the Rectangle and B = its breadth

So L = 2 * B

A = area of the rectangle which is 98 cm^2

So A = L * B = 98 cm^2

substitute 2B for L from the 1st equation to give A = 2 * B*B= 2 * B^2 = 98 cm^2

Thus B^2 = 49 cm^2

finally B = 7 cm and therefore L = 2 * B = 14cm

The perimeter P = 2 * (L+B) = 2* (8cm + 14cm) = 2 * 22cm = 44 cm
