The length of a rod is 20 cm and area of cross-section 2 cm2. The Young's modulus of the material of wire is 1.4×1011 N/m2. If the rod is compressed by a load of 5 kg-wt along its length, then find the energy stored in the rod (in Joules).

Given,
Length of a rod (l)= 20 cm
Area of cross - section (A)=2 cm2
Young's modulus of the material of wire(Y)= 1.4×1011 N/m2
Applied load (F)=5 kg-wt or 5×9.81 N= 49.05 N
We know that,
Energy stored in the wire =12 load×elongation=12×F×(FLAY)=12×F2LAY
=12×(49.05)2×20×1022×104×1.4×10118.57×106 J
