The correct option is D 10 cm
Given : αs=12×106/oC αB=18×106/oC
Let the initial length of steel rod and brass rod be Ls and LB respectively.
LsLB=5 cm ............(1)

Let the temperature of both the rods is increased by ΔT.
New length of steel rod Ls=Ls(1+αsΔT)
Also new length of brass rod LB=LB(1+αBΔT)

According to the question, LsLB=5
Ls(1+αsΔT) LB(1+αBΔT)=5
OR LsLB+(LsαsLBαB)ΔT=5 ..........(2)

Using (1) in (2) we get, (LsαsLBαB)ΔT=0
LsLB=αBαs=18×10612×106 Ls=1.5LB ..........(3)

From (1) and (3), 1.5LBLB=5
OR 0.5LB=5 LB=10 cm
