Length of mercury thread at 1000C=10cm

Length of mercury thread at 500C=4cm

The temperature of melting ice =00C

Let the length of the mercury thread when it is kept in contact with melting ice be x

Step 2 : Calculation:

The ratio of mercury column lengths to the temperatures is given by

T100-T0Tθ-T0=l100-l0lθ-l0 where T100T0represents the boiling and freezing point of water respectively and l100l0represents the length of the mercury in

the thermometer at these two temperatures. Here θ=500C at which respective length of the mercury column is given.

On substituting values we get,

100-050-0=10-x4-x2=10-x4-x

24-x=10-x8-2x=10-xx=-2

So, the length of the mercury thread when kept in melting ice is 2cm

Thus, the correct option is (b).
