These mirrors possess the property of lateral inversion i.e. the right-hand side of the object is seen as the left-hand side. Thus, the word AMBULANCE is written laterally inverted in front of the ambulance because when seen in the rearview mirror by another vehicle, the image of the word would get inverted, letting the driver read the word properly so that he can provide the way to the ambulance.
