Question

The light travels with a velocity of 1.5×108 m/s. On entering the second medium its velocity becomes 0.75×108 m/s. what is the refractive index of the second medium with respect to the first medium?

Solution

According to Snell's law,

Refractive index of second medium with respect to the first medium = n21=Speed light in medium 1Speed light in medium 2

n21=v1v2

n21=1.5×1080.75×108=2.

Thus the refractive index of the second medium with respect to the first medium is 2.
