Question

The line passing through A-2,3and B4,bis perpendicular to the line 2x-4y=5. Find the value of b.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Finding the slope of the line AB:
Given points are A-2,3 and B4,b
Slope of a line when two points are given is represented by

m=y2-y1x2-x1
Thus, slope of line AB= m1=b-34+2
m1=b-36

Step 2: Finding the slope of the line 2x-4y=5:
The given equation can be written as :
2x-4y=5
4y=2x-5
y=12x-54
On comparing with y=mx+c
Slope , m2=12(where m2 is the slope of the line 2x-4y=5)

Step 3: Finding the value of ‘b’ using the condition of perpendicular lines:
When any two lines are given as perpendicular , then
m1.m2=-1

b-36×12=-1

b-3=-12

b=-9

Hence, value of b is 9
