The geometrical isomerism is generally shown by unsaturated organic compounds. When the rotation of carbon bond is restricted only by the condition, it can be categorized as cis configuration and trans configuration.

2-Butene may exist as cis and trans isomers. The cis-isomer has the two methyl groups on the same side and the trans-isomer has the two methyl groups on opposite sides.

Due to restricted rotation around double bond, it exhibits geometrical isomerism.


2-methyl propene and 2-methyl-2-butene contain a double bond but the groups attached to one of the C of the double bond are the same.
