The pleural membrane is thin, moist, slippery and has two layers. The outer layer, called the parietal pleura, is attached to the inside of the rib cage and the diaphragm while the inner layer, called the visceral pleura, covers the lungs. The space between these layers, called the pleural cavity, is fluid-filled, and thus, provides cushioning and lubrication to the lungs.
