The magnitude of friction depends on
Irregularities on the surface
Normal reaction between surfaces
Friction is caused by the irregularities on the two surfaces in contact. Even those surfaces which appear very smooth have a large number of minute irregularities on them. The interlocking of these irregularities gives rise to friction. Normal force is the amount of force acting perpendicular to the surface in contact. The magnitude of friction depends upon the normal force between surfaces not the weight of the objects.
