This response develops when tissue is damaged or invaded by microbes. Neutrophils specialize is killing bacteria. Eosinophils kill parasites. Monocytes control inflammation by releasing cytokines. Lymphocytes recognize and destroy cells infected by viruses or transplanted foreign cells.
