Question

The mains supply of a house is through a 2A fuse. How many 50W bulbs can be used in this house at the normal voltage.

Open in App
Solution

In general our household
voltage=220v
Power of a bulb=50=i*v=i*220
i=5/22
i is the current through each bulbs.
we know that these bulbs are connected in parallel and this parallel combination is connected in series to the fuse.the sum of currents in each bulb will be equal to the current through the fuse.
so maximum allowed current =2A=
sum of current if maximum no of bulbs are used
let it be n
so
n*5/22=2
n=2*22/5=8.8
we cannot use 8.8
ie maximum 8 bulbs can be used.if 9 bulbs are used the fuse will break as it exceed the 2A (9*5/22=2.1A)
so maximum 8 bulbs can be used
