$∴ Percentage of discount = \frac{Original price - Discount price}{Original price} \times 100 %$
$= \frac{2500 - 1500}{2500} \times 100 %$
$= \frac{1000}{2500} \times 100 %$
$= \frac{2 \times 5 \times 100}{5 \times 5 \times 100} \times 100 %$
$= \frac{2}{5} \times 100 %$
$= \frac{2 \times 100}{5} %$
$= \frac{2 \times 5 \times 20}{5} %$
$= 2 \times 20 %$
$= 40 %$

Hence, shopkeeper gave a discount of 40%.
