Question

The mass and weight of an object an earth are 5 kg and 49 N respectively. What will be their values on the moon? Assume that the acceleration due to gravity on the moon is 1/6th of that on the earth.

Solution

Weight =Mass×acceleration
Acceleration due to gravity on the earth's surface:
Weight=mg
49N=5×g
g = 9.8 m/s2
Acceleration on the moon:
16×9.8=1.6333m/s2
The weight on the moon:
5 × 1.6333= 8.1665 N
Answer: 8.1665 N
