Question

The mass and weight of an object on earth are 5kg and 49N respectively. What will be their values on the moon ? Assume that the acceleration due to gravity on the moon is 1/6th of that on the earth .

Solution

Dear student,
Weight = Mass × Acceleration

Acceleration due to gravity on the earth's surface :

Weight = mg

49N = 5 × g

5g = 49

g = 9.8 m/s²

Acceleration on the moon :

1/6 × 9.8 = 1.6333 m/s²

The weight on the moon:

5 × 1.6333 = 8.1665N

Answer : 8.1665 N

Mass is irrespective of the place where the object is in. Whatever the place be, the mass remains the same for an object. This is because mass= density×volume. Both these quantities( density and volume) remains same both in here and in moon(remember volume cannot be changed by the effect of gravity). Therefore mass of the object will be:
= 5kg.
