Question

The mass of an empty density bottle is 24 g. Its mass is 60 g when the bottle is completely filled with water and 45 g when filled completely with an unknown liquid . Find the following :

a) volume of bottle

b) density of unknown liquid

c) Relative density of unknown liquid

Solution

a) To find volume of bottle we have :

mass of bottle and mass of bottle + water

So mass of water = mass of bottle + water - mass of bottle = 60 - 24 = 36 g

And volume of water/bottle = massofwaterdensityofwater= 36g1g/cm3 = 36 cm3

b) To find density of unknown liquid we have to find its mass and volume. So mas of unknown liquid = mass of bottle + liquid - mass of bottle = 45 - 24 = 21 g

And volume of liquid = 36 cm3

So density of liquid = massofliquidvolumeofliquid= 21g36cm3= 7g18cm3= 0.58cm3

c) Relative density of liquid = densityofliquiddensityofwaterat4degreecelcius= 7g/18cm31g/cm3= 718= 0.58
