Question

The mass of earth is 80 times that of moon and their diameters are in the ratio 4:1 respectively.
What is the value of g on moon if g on earth 9.8m/s2.

Solution

Suppose Re be radius of the earth and Rm be that of the moon. so according question Re=4Rm
And if Me be the mass of the earth and Mm is the mass of the moon then Me=80Mm

Value of g on the moon is gm=GMm/R2m...............(1)

Value of g on the earth is ge=GMe/R2e=G×80Mm16×R2m=5GMmR2m=5gm

So value of g on moon is ge/5=9.8/5=1.96m/s2
