Question

the mass of Mercury oxide required to produce 18 gram of oxygen by thermal decomposition

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

The thermal decomposition reaction of HgO forms Hg with oxygen gas. It can be written as:
2 HgO --> Hg + O2
Given:
Mass of oxygen = 18 g
Molar mass of oxygen = 32.0 g/mol
Moles of oxygen = mass / molar mass
= 18 g / 32.0 g/mol
= 0.5625 moles

According to balanced chemical reaction:

1 moles of oxygen is formed from = 2 mole of HgO
0.5625 moles of oxygen will be formed from = ( 2/1 ) x 0. 5625 = 1.125 moles of HgO

Molar mass of HgO = 216.59 g/mol

Mass of HgO = Moles x molar mass = 1.125 moles x 216.59 g/mol = 243.7 g of HgO

Answer = 243.7 g of HgO is needed.
