Question

The maximum and minimum distances of a comet from the sun are 8×1012 m and 1.6×1012 m. If its velocity when nearest to the sun is 60 m/s, what will be its velocity in m/s when it is farthest?

Solution

Given, rmax=8×1012 m

rmin=1.6×1012 m

Vmax=60 m/s

As we know from Kepler's law of planter motion, angular momentum of the planet about sun remains constant.
mvr= constant

Vmin×rmax=Vmax×rmin

Vmin=60×1.6×10128×1012

=605=12m/s
