The mean and standard deviation of marks obtained by 50 students of a class in three subjects, mathematics, physics and chemistry are given below :
SubjectMathematicsPhysicsChemistryMean423240.9Standard deviation121520
Which of the three subjects shows the highest variability in marks and which shows the lowest ?
Here, n = 50
For Mathematics,
Coefficient of variation (CV) =σx×100
= 1242×=27×=2007
For Physics, CV = =σx×100 = 1532×100 ...(i)
=150032=46.87 ....(ii)
For Chemistry, CV = =σx×100 = 2040.9×100=200040.9=48.89 ....(iii)
From Eqs. (i), (ii) and (iii) , we have
∵ CV of chemistry > CV of Physics > CV of Mathematics
∴ Chemistry shows the highest variability and Mathematics shows the least variability.
