When the data contains some extremely low or high values, we normally reject the mean as a measure of central tendency. This is because the mean gets affected even with a single extreme value.
For example, lets take the sample data of four observations - 1, 3, 4, 50. The mean of this data is 29. We can see the value of the mean deviates too much from the observations. This is because the data contains extremely low values - 1, 3, 4 and the extremely high value - 50.
