Question

The meiocyte of rice has 24 chromosomes. How many chromosomes are present in its endosperm?

Open in App
Solution

Chromosome number on meiocyte:
  1. Meiocytes are the cell that undergoes meiosis to produce gametes.
  2. The meiocytes are therefore diploid (2n), which is why it can produce the haploid gametes (n) through meiosis.
  3. Therefore, for the given plant has the chromosome number as (2n = 24).

Chromosome number of endosperm:

  1. The endosperm of the plant is triploid or 3n.
  2. Here, the number of chromosome in a diploid cell is 2n = 24.
  3. In a haploid cell the chromosome number will be n = 242 = 12.
  4. The chromosome in an endosperm will be: 3n = 12×3=36
  5. Therefore the chromosome number in endosperm will be 3n = 36.
