Question

The mercury falls by 815 parts between two standard points on the Celsius thermometer when the boiling water at 100°C is allowed to cool to room temperature. Calculate room temperature in Celsius scale.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: We have

The lowest temperature of the water on the Celsius scale is 0°C

And the highest temperature of the water on the Celsius scale is 100°C

So, the gap between two standard points on the Celsius scale =100-0°C=100°C

Step 2: To find the required temperature on the Celsius scale

Since the mercury falls by 815 parts between two standard points

So the room temperature will be 815×100°C

Hence, the room temperature will be 53.33°C.
