The mesophyll of a leaf consists of two types of mesophyll as palisade and spongy mesophyll. Palisade mesophyll comprises elongated, narrow parenchyma cells, which are at right angle to the axis of the leaf. It is present underneath the adaxial (upper) surface of the leaf. Spongy mesophyll is made of irregularly shaped parenchyma cells. It is present in between palisade mesophyll and the abaxial (lower) surface of the leaf.
