The metal associated with haemoglobin is
Iron
O2 is carried in the hemoglobin protein by the heme group. One molecule of hemoglobin is made of four subunits, each containing one heme group. Each heme group (a component of the hemoglobin protein) is a metal complex, containing iron as the central metal atom, that can bind or release molecular oxygen. There are thus, four atoms of iron in each molecule of hemoglobin.
