Question

The metal strontium forms ions with the symbol Sr2+. Write down the formula for each of the following:
i) Strontium oxide ii) Strontium chloride iii) Strontium nitrate iv) Strontium sulphate

Solution

(i) Oxide has O2 ion, strontium ion is Sr2+. Hence by balancing the charge, strontium oxide has the formula SrO.
(ii) Chloride has Cl ion. To balance +2 charge, we need 2Cl ions. Hence formula of strontium chloride is SrCl2.
(iii) Nitrate ion is (NO3). We need 2 nitrate ions to balance the +2 charge of Sr2+. Hence strontium nitrate is Sr(NO3)2.
(iv) Sulphate ion is (SO4)2. We need 1 suphate ion to balance the +2 charge. Hence, SrSO4 is the formula of strontium sulphate.
