Metals like sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca) and aluminium (Al) are very reactive. So, they are not available in free state and cannot be obtained from their compounds by simple heating. These metals cannot be obtained by roasting or calcination either. This is because these metals have more affinity for oxygen than carbon. Therefore, these metals are obtained only by electrolytic reduction.
