Solution

Method of separating gangue from ore by preferential wetting:

  • The process of removal of the impurities from the ore is called concentration of ores.
  • One such method of concentration is Froth Floatation process.
  • It involves the preferential wetting of the ore with the help of oil and gangue by the help of water.
  • In this method the ore slurry is mixed with pine oil (frothier) and ethyl xanthate (collector).
  • The ore gets damped by oil and forms a froth and rises to the surface of tank, while the impurities settle down after wetting.
