Solution

Find the mean mileage of the cars.

Given,

The mileage of 50cars put through testing by a manufacturer.

S.NMileage (km L-1)Class –Marks (xi)Number of cars (fi)fixi
1101211777
212141312156
314161518270
416181713221
i=14fi=50i=14fixi=724

Step 1: Apply direct method
Mean=fixifi
From the table,

Mean=72450=14.48
Thus, the mean mileage is 14.48km/litre.

Step 2: Find mean mileage less than the manufacturers claim.
Given, the manufacturer claimed that the mileage of the model was 16km/litre .
Difference in mileage

Differenceinmileage=16-14.48=1.52km/litre
Hence, the mean mileage is 1.52km/litre less than the manufacturers claim.
