Sand occurs in powdered form. So by using a proper mesh, the mixture of stones can be separated from sand by sieving. The sand will pass through and the stones will be held back.

Winnowing cannot be used in the above case as it is a method in which heavier components of the mixture are separated from the lighter substances with the help of wind. But this method does not work for materials heavier than grains like stones.

Decantation and evaporation cannot be used as in both the techniques one component should be a liquid.
