Maximum nutritional diversity is observed in the kingdom Monera. Monera includes bacteria, cyanobacteria which exhibit varied modes of nutrition. The various modes of nutrition observed in Monera are:
- Autotrophic (photosynthetic/chemosynthetic)
- Heterotrophic (saprophytic/parasitic)
1. In autotrophic mode of nutrition, food is synthesised by the organism. There are two types of autotrophic organisms, they are: photosynthetic and chemosynthetic.
By using light energy, photosynthetic organisms synthesise food.
By using energy obtained from the oxidation of chemicals, chemosynthetic organisms synthesise food.
2. In heterotrophic mode of nutrition, an organism derives nourishment from an external source.
Organisms that derive nourishment from the dead and decaying matter are said to be saprophytic.
Organisms that derive nourishment from a living host are said to be parasitic.
