Question

The molar volume of liquid benzene (density=0.877gmL1) increase by a factor of 2750 as it vaporizes at 20C and that of liquid toluene (density=0.867gmL1) increases by a factor of 7720 at 20C solution has vapour pressure of 46.0torr. Find the mole fraction of benzene in the vapour above the solution.

Solution

VB=780.877×2750mL=244.583L
VT=920.867×7720ml=819.192L

PB=1×0.0821×293×760244.583=74.74torr

PT=1×0.0821×293×760819.192=22.317

46=74.74XB+23.317(1XB)

52.423XB=23.683

XB=0.451

YB=PB×XBPT=74.74×0.45146=0.732
