Let us consider,

L = Length of square

M = Mass of the square lamina

Step 2: Calculating moment of inertia about an axis touching its side and in the plane of the lamina

The moment of inertia must be specified with respect to a chosen axis of rotation. For a point mass, the moment of inertia is just the mass times the square of perpendicular distance to the rotation axis, I=mr2.

Iz=ML26

20=ML26⇒ML2=120kgm2

According to the parallel axis theorem,

Ix=Iy=Iz2=10kgm2IL=Ix+M(L2)2⇒IL=Ix+ML24⇒I1=10+1204⇒I1=40kgm2

Hence, the moment of inertia about an axis touching its side and in the plane of the lamina is 40kgm2.
