The alleles of the monohybrid F1 segregate and enter into gametes separately without blending. The F1 plants thus produce two types of gametes, one having the dominant factor and the other having the recessive factor. Assuming that these gametes combine randomly, we could say that in the F2 generation, homozygous dominant, heterozygous dominant and homozygous recessive individuals are produced in a 1:2:1 ratio. Had they not segregated, the F1 progeny would have produced only a single type of gamete, probably a mix between the dominant and the recessive factor. And we would not have obtained the homozygous condition of the parents back again in the F2generation.
