Finding the ratio of salary to expenditure :

Given,

$\text{Monthly expenditure}=\text{Rs}8,500$
The ratio of salary to expenditure $=$ salary of the person
$\text{Expenditure}=\frac{12000}{8500}=\frac{120}{85}$

Now, above ratio can be converted to its simplest form by dividing numerator and denominator by $5$, we get
$\frac{120÷5}{85÷5}=\frac{24}{17}=24:17$

Therefore, the ratio of salary to expenditure is $24:17$.
