Like cellulose the linear molecules are cross linked by hydrogen bonds and occur in bundles. Chitin is strengthened by protein and calcium carbonate. It occurs in fungal walls and exoskeleton of arthropods. Chitin is second most abundant organic molecule with some 10 giga tonnes of it being produced and degraded annually.
