Ionic bond is a chemical bond formed by the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions. It results from redox reaction when atoms with low ionization energy release electrons to attain stable configuration becoming cations while another atom has high electron affinity which gains the electron to attain stable configuration by becoming anion. Hence, it is more favourable when the cation is large (low ionization energy) and anion is small (high electron affinity).
