In C3 plants, some O2 binds with RuBisCO, which consumes some RuBP and reduces CO2 fixation. When RuBP binds O2, instead of forming two molecules of 3-PGA, it forms one molecule each of 3-PGA and phosphoglycolate in a pathway called photorespiration.
In C4 plants, photorespiration does not occur as they have a mechanism that increases the concentration of CO2 at the enzyme site, thereby preventing the binding of O2 to RuBP.
