Pinctada is the group of clams which are found in salt water habitat. These are marine bivalve molluscs. These organisms belongs to the family of Pteriidae. These are called as the pearl oysters. Pinctada maxima pearl oysters are the species which have the maximum production of pearls. All species within the genus produce pearls. These have an inner shell layer which is composed of tissue called nacre. This is known as 'mother of pearl'.
