The movement of food along the oesophagus and rest of the alimentary canal known as:
Peristalsis
Peristalsis is the slow wave-like movement that is seen on the walls of the oesophagus due to the contraction and relaxation of it's muscles. Peristalsis occurs throughout the alimentary canal. This movement enables the food to be pushed downward. Digestion does not occur in the oesophagus.
