Question

The name of the higher oxide of Copper is__________.

Open in App
Solution

  • Some elements show variable valency (more than one valency) and form ions with different charges.
  • Copper (Cu) shows two valencies - valency 1 and 2.
  • The ion with lower oxidation states gets "ous" suffix and the ion with higher oxidation states gets “ic” suffix.
  • If the valency is 1, the oxide formed is cuprous oxide (Cu2O) and when the valency is 2, the oxide is Cupric oxide (CuO)
  • Therefore the name of higher oxide of copper is Cupric oxide.
