Yin and Tung ( 1948) while criticizing the theory proposed by Scarth about the starch sugar interconversion proposed that this is insufficient to increase the osmotic pressure to bring in turgidity of the guard cells. However, the discovery of the presence of phosphorylase enzyme in the guard cells by Yin and Tung(1948) made way for the proposal of a modified scheme for stomatal opening.
