Solution

(a) Babuli had to visit his family village because he had received a letter from his elder brother asking him to come. Some feud had cropped up and as a result, the family property was to be divided amongst the three brothers.

(b) He had not been to his village for a long time because he had become preoccupied with his life in the city.

(c) When Babuli told his wife that the family land had to be divided she was totally unperturbed. She just asked him “When?” as if she was all prepared and waiting for this event to take place.

(d) When Babuli arrived at the family home, he noted that none of his nephews ran out to meet him. His elder sister-in-law did not run out from the kitchen to receive him. In the entire house, there was an air of unusualness—rather the stillness of the graveyard. It was as if the entire house was preparing for a collapse.

The reason for these changes was the demand for partition by the second brother and his wife. They cared for nothing else.

(e) The second brother offered to buy Babuli’s share of the family land. He offered eighteen thousand rupees as the price.

(f) Babuli gave his share to his elder brother. Before leaving for Bhubaneshwar, he wrote a note for his brother on the blank side of the slip containing details about his share. In this note, he asked his brother to accept his share of the family land.
