Question

The natural water content as a sample taken from soil deposit was found to be 15 %. It has been calculated that the maximum density of soil will be obtained when the water content reaches 21.5%. How much water must be added to each 500 kN as soil (in its natural state) in order to increase the water content to 21.5 %. Take G= 2.75.

Solution

The correct option is B 28.26 kN
Given data

Wnatural=0.15

Wsaturation=0.215

As we know that

Ws=(WT1+w)

Ws=5001.15=434.78 kN

WT when w = 0.215

WTotal=434.78×(1+0.215)=528.26 kN

So water added =528.26500=28.26 kN
