Solution

Rusting:

  • “When a piece of iron requires a film of brownish substance, this substance is called rust and the process is known as rusting.”
  • Rusting of iron is a chemical change as the new substance is formed.

Prevention of rusting:

  • In order to prevent rust from iron, the iron metal is kept in a solution and a protective layer is formed over the surface of the iron. This solution is known as an anti-rust solution i.e., an alkaline solution of phosphates and chromates.
  • The availability of H+ ions decreases in an alkaline solution which facilitates the oxidation of iron to Fe2+.

Hence, the nature of the anti-rust solution is an alkaline solution of phosphates and chromates.
