Question

The nerve which transmits impulses from the ear to brain.

Open in App
Solution

Sound reaches the brain.

  1. Every sound travels at about 332 meters per second.
  2. Auricles collect the sound waves and direct them to the tympanic membrane.
  3. Tympanic membrane vibrations are amplified and transmitted to the middle ear by ear ossicles.
  4. These sound waves are transferred from ossicles to the inner ear (cochlear duct).
  5. The nerve impulses generated pass to the brain in the cochlear (auditory) portion of the vestibulocochlear nerve (auditory nerve – 8th cranial nerve).
  6. The auditory nerve transmits impulses to the auditory nucleus of the medulla oblongata, where they form synapses, and then to the auditory cortex of the temporal lobe of the cerebrum.
  7. The nerve which transmits impulses from the ear to the brain is the vestibulocochlear nerve (auditory nerve).
