IUDs
IntraUterine Devices (IUDs) are devices which are inserted by doctors or expert nurses in the uterus through vagina. They are available in various sizes and shapes.
There are three types of IUDs depending on their mechanism of action:
● Non-medicated IUDs
● Copper releasing IUDs
● Hormone releasing IUDs

Non-medicated IUDs :
Non-medicated IUDs are plastic or metal objects placed in the uterus of the female.
They work by modulating the environment of the uterus. They cause a sterile inflammatory response by producing a minor degree tissue injury. This attracts immune cells which accumulate in the uterus and stimulate phagocytosis of sperms. Examples include Lippes loop.

Copper releasing IUDs :
Copper releasing IUDs releases copper ions in the uterus which suppress the motility of sperms, hence they cannot swim and reach the fallopian tube for fertilisation. They also reduce the fertilising capacity of sperms. Examples include Cu-T, Cu-7 and Multiload 375.

Hormone releasing IUDs :
Hormone releasing IUDs suppress sperm motility by making the cervix hostile. The mucus becomes thick and sticky due to which sperms will not be able to reach the uterus. Examples include LNG-20 and progestasert.
