Question

The number of points with non-negative integral coordinates that lie in the interior of the region common to the circle x2+y2=16 and the parabola y2=4x, is

Open in App
Solution

Let (λ,μ) be interior to the circle.
λ2+μ216<0
λ{0,1,2,3}, μ{0,1,2,3} as the coordinates are non-negative.

And for (λ,μ) to be interior to the parabola,μ24λ<0
λ>(μ2)2
From circle condition,
if μ=0,λ=1,2,3
if μ=1,λ=1,2,3
if μ=2,λ=2,3
if μ=3,λ has no integral values.
(1,0),(2,0),(3,0),(1,1),(2,1),(3,1),(2,2),(3,2) are the possible points.
Hence, total 8 points.
