Question

The number of turns in the primary coil of a transformer are 100 and that in the secondary coil are 200. What type of transformer is it? If the input voltage in the primary coil of the transformer is 200V, find the output voltage in the secondary coil of the transformer.

Solution

Step 1: Given data

Number of turns in the primary coil Np=100

Number of turns in the secondary coil Ns=200

Input voltage in the primary coil is Vp=200V

Step 2: Finding the type of transformer

It is given that Np=100 and Ns=200

We know that when Ns>Np, the transformer is a step-up transformer.

Step 3:Finding the output voltage in the secondary coil of the transformer.

We know that, NsNp=VsVp where Ns and Npis number of turns in the secondary coil and primary coil respectively and Vs and Vp is voltage in the secondary and primary coil of the transformer.

Substituting the given values in

NsNp=VsVp

200100=Vs200

Cross multiplying

Vs=200100×200Vs=400V

Hence, the transformer is a step-up transformer and the output voltage in the secondary coil of the transformer is 400V.
